Isaiah 30:18-21

Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;
   therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
   blessed are all those who wait for him.
Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no
more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when
he hears it, he will answer you. Though the Lord may give you the bread
of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide
himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And when you
turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a
word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’

Acts 2:26-47

therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
   moreover, my flesh will live in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
   or let your Holy One experience corruption.
You have made known to me the ways of life;
   you will make me full of gladness with your presence.”
‘Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David
that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him
that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing
this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying,
“He was not abandoned to Hades,
   nor did his flesh experience corruption.”
This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. Being
therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from
the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that
you both see and hear. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but
he himself says,
“The Lord said to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand,
   until I make your enemies your footstool.’ ”
Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God
has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.’
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter
and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter said to
them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and
for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’
And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying,
‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ So those who welcomed
his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons
were added. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and
fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done
by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in
common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the
proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time
together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food
with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of
all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who
were being saved.

John 14:15-31

‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever.
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with
you, and he will be in you.
‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while
the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live,
you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father,
and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep
them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my
Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’ Judas (not
Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself
to us, and not to the world?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me
will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to
them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not
keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the
Father who sent me.
‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as
the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them
be afraid. You heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to
you.” If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father,
because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this
before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will
no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He
has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that
the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

Morning Psalms:  Psalm 103

Psalm 103

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
   and all that is within me,
   bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
   and do not forget all his benefits—
who forgives all your iniquity,
   who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the Pit,
   who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good as long as you live
   so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord works vindication
   and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
   his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
   slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always accuse,
   nor will he keep his anger for ever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
   nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
   so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
   so far he removes our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion for his children,
   so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
For he knows how we were made;
   he remembers that we are dust.

As for mortals, their days are like grass;
   they flourish like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
   and its place knows it no more.
But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
   on those who fear him,
   and his righteousness to children’s children,
to those who keep his covenant
   and remember to do his commandments.

The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
   and his kingdom rules over all.
Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
   you mighty ones who do his bidding,
   obedient to his spoken word.
Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
   his ministers that do his will.
Bless the Lord, all his works,
   in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Evening Psalms: Psalm 111, 114

Psalm 111

Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
   in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the works of the Lord,
   studied by all who delight in them.
Full of honour and majesty is his work,
   and his righteousness endures for ever.
He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;
   the Lord is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him;
   he is ever mindful of his covenant.
He has shown his people the power of his works,
   in giving them the heritage of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
   all his precepts are trustworthy.
They are established for ever and ever,
   to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
He sent redemption to his people;
   he has commanded his covenant for ever.
   Holy and awesome is his name.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
   all those who practise it have a good understanding.
   His praise endures for ever.

Psalm 114

When Israel went out from Egypt,
   the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
Judah became God’s sanctuary,
   Israel his dominion.

The sea looked and fled;
   Jordan turned back.
The mountains skipped like rams,
   the hills like lambs.

Why is it, O sea, that you flee?
   O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
   O hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
   at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool of water,
   the flint into a spring of water.
