2 Samuel 7:18-29
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, ‘Who am
I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus
far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God; you have
spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come. May
this be instruction for the people,* O Lord God! And what more can
David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! Because of
your promise, and according to your own heart, you have wrought all
this greatness, so that your servant may know it. Therefore you are
great, O Lord God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God
besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. Who is
like your people, like Israel? Is there another* nation on earth whose
God went to redeem it as a people, and to make a name for himself,
doing great and awesome things for them,* by driving out* before his
people nations and their gods?* And you established your people Israel
for yourself to be your people for ever; and you, O Lord, became their
God. And now, O Lord God, as for the word that you have spoken
concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it for ever;
do as you have promised. Thus your name will be magnified for ever in
the saying, “The Lord of hosts is God over Israel”; and the house
of your servant David will be established before you. For you, O Lord
of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your
servant, saying, “I will build you a house”; therefore your
servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. And now, O Lord
God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this
good thing to your servant; now therefore may it please you to bless
the house of your servant, so that it may continue for ever before
you; for you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall
the house of your servant be blessed for ever.’

Galatians 3:1-14
You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes
that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified! The only thing
I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing
the works of the law or by believing what you heard? Are you so
foolish? Having started with the Spirit, are you now ending with the
flesh? Did you experience so much for nothing?—if it really was for
nothing. Well then, does God* supply you with the Spirit and work
miracles among you by your doing the works of the law, or by your
believing what you heard?
Just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was reckoned to him as
righteousness’, so, you see, those who believe are the descendants
of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the
Gentiles by faith, declared the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying,
‘All the Gentiles shall be blessed in you.’ For this reason, those
who believe are blessed with Abraham who believed.
For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse; for it
is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all
the things written in the book of the law.’ Now it is evident that
no one is justified before God by the law; for ‘The one who is
righteous will live by faith.’* But the law does not rest on faith;
on the contrary, ‘Whoever does the works of the law* will live by
them.’ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a
curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a
tree’— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might
come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the
Spirit through faith.

Luke 1:57-66
Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her
neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy
to her, and they rejoiced with her.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were
going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said,
‘No; he is to be called John.’ They said to her, ‘None of your
relatives has this name.’ Then they began motioning to his father to
find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a
writing-tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And all of them were
amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he
began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours, and
all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country
of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, ‘What then will
this child become?’ For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.

Morning Psalms: Psalm 80
Psalm 80
Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock!
You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh.
Stir up your might,
and come to save us!
Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.
O Lord God of hosts,
how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers?
You have fed them with the bread of tears,
and given them tears to drink in full measure.
You make us the scorn* of our neighbours;
our enemies laugh among themselves.
Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.
You brought a vine out of Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
You cleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches;
it sent out its branches to the sea,
and its shoots to the River.
Why then have you broken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
The boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.
Turn again, O God of hosts;
look down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
the stock that your right hand planted.*
They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down;*
may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.
But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand,
the one whom you made strong for yourself.
Then we will never turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call on your name.
Restore us, O Lord God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Evening Psalms: Psalm 146, 147
Psalm 146
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God all my life long.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in mortals, in whom there is no help.
When their breath departs, they return to the earth;
on that very day their plans perish.
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith for ever;
who executes justice for the oppressed;
who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free;
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the strangers;
he upholds the orphan and the widow,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
The Lord will reign for ever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 147
Praise the Lord!
How good it is to sing praises to our God;
for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the broken-hearted,
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;
he casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre.
He covers the heavens with clouds,
prepares rain for the earth,
makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the animals their food,
and to the young ravens when they cry.
His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;*
but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
he blesses your children within you.
He grants peace* within your borders;
he fills you with the finest of wheat.
He sends out his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
He gives snow like wool;
he scatters frost like ashes.
He hurls down hail like crumbs—
who can stand before his cold?
He sends out his word, and melts them;
he makes his wind blow, and the waters flow.
He declares his word to Jacob,
his statutes and ordinances to Israel.
He has not dealt thus with any other nation;
they do not know his ordinances.
Praise the Lord!
