Genesis 24:50-67

Then Laban and Bethuel answered, ‘The thing comes from the Lord; we
cannot speak to you anything bad or good. Look, Rebekah is before you;
take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as
the Lord has spoken.’

 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the
ground before the Lord. And the servant brought out jewellery of
silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also
gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. Then he and
the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night
there. When they rose in the morning, he said, ‘Send me back to my
master.’ Her brother and her mother said, ‘Let the girl remain
with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.’ But he
said to them, ‘Do not delay me, since the Lord has made my journey
successful; let me go, that I may go to my master.’ They said, ‘We
will call the girl, and ask her.’ And they called Rebekah, and said
to her, ‘Will you go with this man?’ She said, ‘I will.’ So
they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse along with
Abraham’s servant and his men. And they blessed Rebekah and said to
her,
‘May you, our sister, become
   thousands of myriads;
may your offspring gain possession
   of the gates of their foes.’
Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed
the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

 Now Isaac had come from* Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the
Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk* in the field; and
looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she
saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the
servant, ‘Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet
us?’ The servant said, ‘It is my master.’ So she took her veil
and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he
had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He
took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was
comforted after his mother’s death.

2 Timothy 2:14-21

Remind them of this, and warn them before God* that they are to avoid
wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are
listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by
him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the
word of truth. Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people into
more and more impiety, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among
them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth by
claiming that the resurrection has already taken place. They are
upsetting the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands,
bearing this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his’, and,
‘Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from
wickedness.’

 In a large house there are utensils not only of gold and silver but
also of wood and clay, some for special use, some for ordinary. All
who cleanse themselves of the things I have mentioned* will become
special utensils, dedicated and useful to the owner of the house,
ready for every good work.

Mark 10:13-22

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might
touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus
saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little
children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that
the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive
the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.’ And he
took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before
him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good
but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You
shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear
false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and
mother.” ’ He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since
my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack
one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money* to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he
heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many
possessions.

Morning Psalms: Psalm 93, 96

Psalm 93

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;
   the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
   your throne is established from of old;
   you are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
   the floods have lifted up their voice;
   the floods lift up their roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
   more majestic than the waves* of the sea,
   majestic on high is the Lord!

Your decrees are very sure;
   holiness befits your house,
   O Lord, for evermore.

Psalm 96

O sing to the Lord a new song;
   sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
   tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
   his marvellous works among all the peoples.
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
   he is to be revered above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
   but the Lord made the heavens.
Honour and majesty are before him;
   strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
   ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
   bring an offering, and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in holy splendour;
   tremble before him, all the earth.

Say among the nations, ‘The Lord is king!
   The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved.
   He will judge the peoples with equity.’
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
   let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
   let the field exult, and everything in it.
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
   before the Lord; for he is coming,
   for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
   and the peoples with his truth.

Evening Psalms: Psalm 34

Psalm 34

I will bless the Lord at all times;
   his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
   let the humble hear and be glad.
O magnify the Lord with me,
   and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me,
   and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him, and be radiant;
   so your* faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,
   and was saved from every trouble.
The angel of the Lord encamps
   around those who fear him, and delivers them.
O taste and see that the Lord is good;
   happy are those who take refuge in him.
O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,
   for those who fear him have no want.
The young lions suffer want and hunger,
   but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Come, O children, listen to me;
   I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Which of you desires life,
   and covets many days to enjoy good?
Keep your tongue from evil,
   and your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil, and do good;
   seek peace, and pursue it.

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
   and his ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against evildoers,
   to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,
   and rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,
   and saves the crushed in spirit.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
   but the Lord rescues them from them all.
He keeps all their bones;
   not one of them will be broken.
Evil brings death to the wicked,
   and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
   none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
