Genesis 18:16-33

Then the men set out from there, and they looked towards Sodom; and
Abraham went with them to set them on their way. The Lord said,
‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that
Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of
the earth shall be blessed in him?* No, for I have chosen* him, that
he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way
of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may
bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’ Then the Lord
said, ‘How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how
very grave their sin! I must go down and see whether they have done
altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I
will know.’

 So the men turned from there, and went towards Sodom, while Abraham
remained standing before the Lord.* Then Abraham came near and said,
‘Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose
there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then sweep away
the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it?
Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the
wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from
you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?’ And the
Lord said, ‘If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will
forgive the whole place for their sake.’ Abraham answered, ‘Let me
take it upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.
Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the
whole city for lack of five?’ And he said, ‘I will not destroy it
if I find forty-five there.’ Again he spoke to him, ‘Suppose forty
are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of forty I will not
do it.’ Then he said, ‘Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak.
Suppose thirty are found there.’ He answered, ‘I will not do it,
if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘Let me take it upon myself to
speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.’ He answered,
‘For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.’ Then he said,
‘Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose
ten are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten I will not
destroy it.’ And the Lord went his way, when he had finished
speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Galatians 5:13-25

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters;* only do not use
your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence,* but through love
become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a
single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are
not consumed by one another.
 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the
flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what
the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to
each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are
led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of
the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness,
idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels,
dissensions, factions, envy,* drunkenness, carousing, and things like
these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such
things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ
Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we
live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Mark 8:22-30

They came to Bethsaida. Some people* brought a blind man to him and
begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him
out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid
his hands on him, he asked him, ‘Can you see anything?’ And the
man* looked up and said, ‘I can see people, but they look like
trees, walking.’ Then Jesus* laid his hands on his eyes again; and
he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything
clearly. Then he sent him away to his home, saying, ‘Do not even go
into the village.’* 

 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea
Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say
that I am?’ And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others,
Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ He asked them,
‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the
Messiah.’* And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
   the world, and those who live in it; 
for he has founded it on the seas,
   and established it on the rivers. 

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
   And who shall stand in his holy place? 
Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,
   who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
   and do not swear deceitfully. 
They will receive blessing from the Lord,
   and vindication from the God of their salvation. 
Such is the company of those who seek him,
   who seek the face of the God of Jacob.*

Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,*
   ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

   worship the Lord in holy splendour. 

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
   the God of glory thunders,
   the Lord, over mighty waters. 
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
   the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. 

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
   the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
   and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,*
   and strips the forest bare;

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;

May the Lord give strength to his people!

Psalm 8

O Lord, our Sovereign,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth! 

You have set your glory above the heavens. 
   Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
   to silence the enemy and the avenger. 

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
   the moon and the stars that you have established; 
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
   mortals* that you care for them? 

Yet you have made them a little lower than God,*
   and crowned them with glory and honour. 
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
   you have put all things under their feet, 
all sheep and oxen,
   and also the beasts of the field, 
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
   whatever passes along the paths of the seas. 

O Lord, our Sovereign,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place,
   O Lord of hosts! 
My soul longs, indeed it faints
   for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
   to the living God. 

Even the sparrow finds a home,
   and the swallow a nest for herself,
   where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
   my King and my God. 
Happy are those who live in your house,
   ever singing your praise.

Happy are those whose strength is in you,
