Exodus 13:17-14:4
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the
land of the Philistines, although that was nearer; for God thought,
‘If the people face war, they may change their minds and return to
Egypt.’ So God led the people by the roundabout way of the
wilderness towards the Red Sea.* The Israelites went up out of the
land of Egypt prepared for battle. And Moses took with him the bones
of Joseph, who had required a solemn oath of the Israelites, saying,
‘God will surely take notice of you, and then you must carry my
bones with you from here.’ They set out from Succoth, and camped at
Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. The Lord went in front of them
in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a
pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel
by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar
of fire by night left its place in front of the people. Then the Lord
said to Moses: ‘Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp in front
of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon;
you shall camp opposite it, by the sea. Pharaoh will say of the
Israelites, “They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the
wilderness has closed in on them.” I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,
and he will pursue them, so that I will gain glory for myself over
Pharaoh and all his army; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the
Lord.’ And they did so.

2 Corinthians 4:16-5:10
So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away,
our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight
momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory
beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at
what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what
cannot be seen is eternal.
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have
a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the
heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our
heavenly dwelling— if indeed, when we have taken it off* we will not
be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan under
our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further
clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who
has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the
Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at
home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith,
not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away
from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or
away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear
before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive
recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.

Mark 12:18-27
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and
asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a
man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man* shall
marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. There were
seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no children;
and the second married her and died, leaving no children; and the
third likewise; none of the seven left children. Last of all the woman
herself died. In the resurrection* whose wife will she be? For the
seven had married her.’
Jesus said to them, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong, that
you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? For when they
rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but
are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you
not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God
said to him, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God
of Jacob”? He is God not of the dead, but of the living; you are
quite wrong.’

Morning Psalms: Psalm 145
Psalm 145
I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will bless you,
and praise your name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.
All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power,
to make known to all people your* mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendour of your* kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is faithful in all his words,
and gracious in all his deeds.*
The Lord upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.
The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

Evening Psalms: Psalm 104
Psalm 104
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
O Lord my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honour and majesty,
wrapped in light as with a garment.
You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
you set the beams of your* chambers on the waters,
you make the clouds your* chariot,
you ride on the wings of the wind,
you make the winds your* messengers,
fire and flame your* ministers.
You set the earth on its foundations,
so that it shall never be shaken.
You cover it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
At your rebuke they flee;
at the sound of your thunder they take to flight.
They rose up to the mountains, ran down to the valleys
to the place that you appointed for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass,
so that they might not again cover the earth.
You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
they flow between the hills,
giving drink to every wild animal;
the wild asses quench their thirst.
By the streams* the birds of the air have their habitation;
they sing among the branches.
>From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.
You cause the grass to grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to use,*
to bring forth food from the earth,
and wine to gladden the human heart,
oil to make the face shine,
and bread to strengthen the human heart.
The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,
the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
In them the birds build their nests;
the stork has its home in the fir trees.
The high mountains are for the wild goats;
the rocks are a refuge for the coneys.
You have made the moon to mark the seasons;
the sun knows its time for setting.
You make darkness, and it is night,
when all the animals of the forest come creeping out.
The young lions roar for their prey,
seeking their food from God.
When the sun rises, they withdraw
and lie down in their dens.
People go out to their work
and to their labour until the evening.
O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
creeping things innumerable are there,
living things both small and great.
There go the ships,
and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.
These all look to you
to give them their food in due season;
when you give to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.
When you send forth your spirit,* they are created;
and you renew the face of the ground.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works—
who looks on the earth and it trembles,
who touches the mountains and they smoke.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the Lord.
Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord!
