<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Ah, soiled, defiled,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>oppressing city!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It has listened to no voice;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>it has accepted no correction.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It has not trusted in the Lord;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>it has not drawn near to its God.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The officials within it</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>are roaring lions;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">its judges are evening wolves</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>that leave nothing until the morning.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Its prophets are reckless,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>faithless persons;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">its priests have profaned what is sacred,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>they have done violence to the law.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Lord within it is righteous;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>he does no wrong.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Every morning he renders his judgement,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>each dawn without fail;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>but the unjust knows no shame.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I have cut off nations;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>their battlements are in ruins;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I have laid waste their streets</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>so that no one walks in them;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">their cities have been made desolate,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>without people, without inhabitants.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I said, ‘Surely the city* will fear me,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>it will accept correction;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">it will not lose sight*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>of all that I have brought upon it.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">But they were the more eager</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>to make all their deeds corrupt.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Therefore wait for me, says the Lord,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>for the day when I arise as a witness.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For my decision is to gather nations,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>to assemble kingdoms,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">to pour out upon them my indignation,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>all the heat of my anger;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">for in the fire of my passion</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>all the earth shall be consumed.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">At that time I will change the speech of the peoples</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>to a pure speech,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">that all of them may call on the name of the Lord</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and serve him with one accord.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>my suppliants, my scattered ones,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>shall bring my offering.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">On that day you shall not be put to shame</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>because of all the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">for then I will remove from your midst</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>your proudly exultant ones,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">and you shall no longer be haughty</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>in my holy mountain.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For I will leave in the midst of you</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>a people humble and lowly.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord—</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>the remnant of Israel;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">they shall do no wrong</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and utter no lies,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">nor shall a deceitful tongue</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>be found in their mouths.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Then they will pasture and lie down,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and no one shall make them afraid.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">1 Peter 2:11-25</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul. Conduct yourselves honourably among the Gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honourable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>For the Lord’s sake accept the authority of every human institution,* whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. As servants* of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. Honour everyone. Love the family of believers.* Fear God. Honour the emperor.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘He committed no sin,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and no deceit was found in his mouth.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,* so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds* you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage,* he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.” When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.” When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.* Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage.* And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.” But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?* Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?”* So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and all the kingdoms of Canaan—</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">and gave their land as a heritage,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>a heritage to his people Israel.</p>
