<p class="MsoNormal">Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.” ’ But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,* knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The Lord God said to the serpent,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘Because you have done this,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>cursed are you among all animals</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and among all wild creatures;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">upon your belly you shall go,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and dust you shall eat</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>all the days of your life.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I will put enmity between you and the woman,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and between your offspring and hers;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">he will strike your head,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and you will strike his heel.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">To the woman he said,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘I will greatly increase your pangs in childbearing;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>in pain you shall bring forth children,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">yet your desire shall be for your husband,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and he shall rule over you.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">And to the man* he said,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and have eaten of the tree</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">about which I commanded you,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>“You shall not eat of it”,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">cursed is the ground because of you;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and you shall eat the plants of the field.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">By the sweat of your face</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>you shall eat bread</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">until you return to the ground,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>for out of it you were taken;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">you are dust,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and to dust you shall return.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The man named his wife Eve,* because she was the mother of all who live. And the Lord God made garments of skins for the man* and for his wife, and clothed them.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Then the Lord God said, ‘See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever’— therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Hebrews 2:1-10</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For if the message declared through angels was valid, and every transgression or disobedience received a just penalty, how can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was declared at first through the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, while God added his testimony by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to his will.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Now God* did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘What are human beings that you are mindful of them,*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>or mortals, that you care for them?*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You have made them for a little while lower* than the angels;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>you have crowned them with glory and honour,*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>subjecting all things under their feet.’</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Now in subjecting all things to them, God* left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower* than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God* he might taste death for everyone.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>It was fitting that God,* for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’* And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ He said,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“Make straight the way of the Lord” ’,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">as the prophet Isaiah said.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah,* nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Give ear to my words, O Lord;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Listen to the sound of my cry,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>my King and my God,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>for to you I pray.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>in awe of you.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>for they have rebelled against you.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor—</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">For the wicked boast of the desires of their heart,</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In the pride of their countenance the wicked say, ‘God will not seek it out’;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Their ways prosper at all times;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">They think in their heart, ‘We shall not be moved;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Their mouths are filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">They sit in ambush in the villages;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>in hiding-places they murder the innocent.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Their eyes stealthily watch for the helpless;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">they lurk that they may seize the poor;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>they seize the poor and drag them off in their net.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">They stoop, they crouch,</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">They think in their heart, ‘God has forgotten,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>he has hidden his face, he will never see it.’</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Rise up, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>do not forget the oppressed.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Why do the wicked renounce God,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and say in their hearts, ‘You will not call us to account’?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">But you do see! Indeed you note trouble and grief,</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">the helpless commit themselves to you;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>you have been the helper of the orphan.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Break the arm of the wicked and evildoers;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>seek out their wickedness until you find none.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Lord is king for ever and ever;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>the nations shall perish from his land.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">O Lord, you will hear the desire of the meek;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>so that those from earth may strike terror no more.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>‘Flee like a bird to the mountains;*</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">for look, the wicked bend the bow,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>they have fitted their arrow to the string,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">If the foundations are destroyed,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>what can the righteous do?’</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Lord is in his holy temple;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>the Lord’s throne is in heaven.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>His eyes behold, his gaze examines humankind.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>and his soul hates the lover of violence.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulphur;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For the Lord is righteous;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">he loves righteous deeds;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">   </span>the upright shall behold his face.</p>
