<p>Saturday 17 October 2020</p><p>DAILY LECTIONARY</p><p></p><p>Email Evangelism, forward to a friend: <a href="http://www.dailylectionary.org" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">http://www.dailylectionary.org</a></p><p>******************************************************************</p><p>Ecclesiasticus 3:17-31</p><p></p><p>My child, perform your tasks with humility;*</p><p>then you will be loved by those whom God accepts.</p><p>The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself;</p><p>so you will find favour in the sight of the Lord.*</p><p>For great is the might of the Lord;</p><p>but by the humble he is glorified.</p><p>Neither seek what is too difficult for you,</p><p>nor investigate what is beyond your power.</p><p>Reflect upon what you have been commanded,</p><p>for what is hidden is not your concern.</p><p>Do not meddle in matters that are beyond you,</p><p>for more than you can understand has been shown to you.</p><p>For their conceit has led many astray,</p><p>and wrong opinion has impaired their judgement.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Without eyes there is no light;</p><p>without knowledge there is no wisdom.*</p><p>A stubborn mind will fare badly at the end,</p><p>and whoever loves danger will perish in it.</p><p>A stubborn mind will be burdened by troubles,</p><p>and the sinner adds sin to sins.</p><p>When calamity befalls the proud, there is no healing,</p><p>for an evil plant has taken root in him.</p><p>The mind of the intelligent appreciates proverbs,</p><p>and an attentive ear is the desire of the wise.</p><p></p><p></p><p>As water extinguishes a blazing fire,</p><p>so almsgiving atones for sin.</p><p>Those who repay favours give thought to the future;</p><p>when they fall they will find support.</p><p>******************************************************************</p><p>Acts 28:17-31</p><p></p><p>Three days later he called together the local leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them, ‘Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, yet I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. When they had examined me, the Romans* wanted to release me, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to the emperor—even though I had no charge to bring against my nation. For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you,* since it is for the sake of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.’ They replied, ‘We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken anything evil about you. But we would like to hear from you what you think, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.’</p><p>After they had fixed a day to meet him, they came to him at his lodgings in great numbers. From morning until evening he explained the matter to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. Some were convinced by what he had said, while others refused to believe. So they disagreed with each other; and as they were leaving, Paul made one further statement: ‘The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah,</p><p>“Go to this people and say,</p><p>You will indeed listen, but never understand,</p><p>and you will indeed look, but never perceive.</p><p>For this people’s heart has grown dull,</p><p>and their ears are hard of hearing,</p><p>and they have shut their eyes;</p><p>so that they might not look with their eyes,</p><p>and listen with their ears,</p><p>and understand with their heart and turn—</p><p>and I would heal them.”</p><p>Let it be known to you then that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.’*</p><p></p><p>He lived there for two whole years at his own expense* and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.</p><p>******************************************************************</p><p>Luke 9:37-50</p><p></p><p>On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. Just then a man from the crowd shouted, ‘Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he* shrieks. It throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.’ Jesus answered, ‘You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.’ While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. And all were astounded at the greatness of God.</p><p></p><p>While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, ‘Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.’ But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.</p><p>An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.’</p><p>John answered, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.’ ******************************************************************</p><p>Morning Psalms: Psalm 20, 21:1-14</p><p></p><p>Psalm 20</p><p></p><p>The Lord answer you in the day of trouble!</p><p>The name of the God of Jacob protect you!</p><p>May he send you help from the sanctuary,</p><p>and give you support from Zion.</p><p>May he remember all your offerings,</p><p>and regard with favour your burnt sacrifices.</p><p>Selah</p><p></p><p></p><p>May he grant you your heart’s desire,</p><p>and fulfil all your plans.</p><p>May we shout for joy over your victory,</p><p>and in the name of our God set up our banners.</p><p>May the Lord fulfil all your petitions.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;</p><p>he will answer him from his holy heaven</p><p>with mighty victories by his right hand.</p><p>Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses,</p><p>but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.</p><p>They will collapse and fall,</p><p>but we shall rise and stand upright.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Give victory to the king, O Lord;</p><p>answer us when we call.*</p><p></p><p></p><p>Psalm 21:1-14</p><p></p><p>In your strength the king rejoices, O Lord,</p><p>and in your help how greatly he exults!</p><p>You have given him his heart’s desire,</p><p>and have not withheld the request of his lips.</p><p>Selah</p><p>For you meet him with rich blessings;</p><p>you set a crown of fine gold on his head.</p><p>He asked you for life; you gave it to him—</p><p>length of days for ever and ever.</p><p>His glory is great through your help;</p><p>splendour and majesty you bestow on him.</p><p>You bestow on him blessings for ever;</p><p>you make him glad with the joy of your presence.</p><p>For the king trusts in the Lord,</p><p>and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Your hand will find out all your enemies;</p><p>your right hand will find out those who hate you.</p><p>You will make them like a fiery furnace</p><p>when you appear.</p><p>The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,</p><p>and fire will consume them.</p><p>You will destroy their offspring from the earth,</p><p>and their children from among humankind.</p><p>If they plan evil against you,</p><p>if they devise mischief, they will not succeed.</p><p>For you will put them to flight;</p><p>you will aim at their faces with your bows.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!</p><p>We will sing and praise your power.</p><p>******************************************************************</p><p>Evening Psalms: Psalm 110:1-7, 116, 117</p><p></p><p>Psalm 110:1-7</p><p></p><p>The Lord says to my lord,</p><p>‘Sit at my right hand</p><p>until I make your enemies your footstool.’</p><p></p><p></p><p>The Lord sends out from Zion</p><p>your mighty sceptre.</p><p>Rule in the midst of your foes.</p><p>Your people will offer themselves willingly</p><p>on the day you lead your forces</p><p>on the holy mountains.*</p><p>From the womb of the morning,</p><p>like dew, your youth* will come to you.</p><p>The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,</p><p>‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’*</p><p></p><p></p><p>The Lord is at your right hand;</p><p>he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.</p><p>He will execute judgement among the nations,</p><p>filling them with corpses;</p><p>he will shatter heads</p><p>over the wide earth.</p><p>He will drink from the stream by the path;</p><p>therefore he will lift up his head.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Psalm 116</p><p></p><p>I love the Lord, because he has heard</p><p>my voice and my supplications.</p><p>Because he inclined his ear to me,</p><p>therefore I will call on him as long as I live.</p><p>The snares of death encompassed me;</p><p>the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;</p><p>I suffered distress and anguish.</p><p>Then I called on the name of the Lord:</p><p>‘O Lord, I pray, save my life!’</p><p></p><p></p><p>Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;</p><p>our God is merciful.</p><p>The Lord protects the simple;</p><p>when I was brought low, he saved me.</p><p>Return, O my soul, to your rest,</p><p>for the Lord has
