Genesis 49:1-2,8-12

Then Jacob called his sons, and said: 'Gather around, that I may tell
you what will happen to you in days to come.
2Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob;
   listen to Israel your father.

8'Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
   your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
   your father's sons shall bow down before you.
9Judah is a lion's whelp;
   from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He crouches down, he stretches out like a lion,
   like a lioness-who dares rouse him up?
10The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,
   nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;*
   and the obedience of the peoples is his.
11Binding his foal to the vine
   and his donkey's colt to the choice vine,
he washes his garments in wine
   and his robe in the blood of grapes;
12his eyes are darker than wine,
   and his teeth whiter than milk.

Colossians 3:18-4:6

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is your
acceptable duty in the Lord. 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, or
they may lose heart. 22Slaves, obey your earthly masters* in everything,
not only while being watched and in order to please them, but
wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord.* 23Whatever your task, put yourselves
into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters,* 24since you
know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward;
you serve* the Lord Christ. 25For the wrongdoer will be paid back for
whatever wrong has been done, and there is no partiality. 41Masters,
treat your slaves justly and fairly, for you know that you also have a
Master in heaven.

Further Instructions2 Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it
with thanksgiving. 3At the same time pray for us as well that God will
open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of
Christ, for which I am in prison, 4so that I may reveal it clearly, as I
should.
5 Conduct yourselves wisely towards outsiders, making the most of the
time.* 6Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that
you may know how you ought to answer everyone.

John 15:1-16

'I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2He removes every
branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he
prunes* to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed* by
the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just
as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine,
neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine, you are the
branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because
apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is
thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered,
thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words
abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become* my
disciples. 9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my
love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as
I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11I have
said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy
may be complete.
12 'This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved
you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for
one's friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do
not call you servants* any longer, because the servant* does not know
what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have
made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did
not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit,
fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask
him in my name.

Morning Psalms:  Psalm 98, 99, 100

Psalm 98

O sing to the Lord a new song,
   for he has done marvellous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
   have gained him victory.
2The Lord has made known his victory;
   he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
   to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
   the victory of our God.

4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
   break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
   with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6With trumpets and the sound of the horn
   make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
   the world and those who live in it.
8Let the floods clap their hands;
   let the hills sing together for joy
9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming
   to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
   and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 99

The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble!
   He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2The Lord is great in Zion;
   he is exalted over all the peoples.
3Let them praise your great and awesome name.
   Holy is he!
4Mighty King,* lover of justice,
   you have established equity;
you have executed justice
   and righteousness in Jacob.
5Extol the Lord our God;
   worship at his footstool.
   Holy is he!

6Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
   Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
   They cried to the Lord, and he answered them.
7He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
   they kept his decrees,
   and the statutes that he gave them.

8O Lord our God, you answered them;
   you were a forgiving God to them,
   but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
9Extol the Lord our God,
   and worship at his holy mountain;
   for the Lord our God is holy.

Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
2   Worship the Lord with gladness;
   come into his presence with singing.

3Know that the Lord is God.
   It is he that made us, and we are his;*
   we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
   and his courts with praise.
   Give thanks to him, bless his name.

5For the Lord is good;
   his steadfast love endures for ever,
   and his faithfulness to all generations.

Evening Psalms:  Psalm 104

Psalm 104

Bless the Lord, O my soul.
   O Lord my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honour and majesty,
2 wrapped in light as with a garment.
You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
3 you set the beams of your* chambers on the waters,
you make the clouds your* chariot,
   you ride on the wings of the wind,
4you make the winds your* messengers,
   fire and flame your* ministers.

5You set the earth on its foundations,
   so that it shall never be shaken.
6You cover it with the deep as with a garment;
   the waters stood above the mountains.
7At your rebuke they flee;
   at the sound of your thunder they take to flight.
8They rose up to the mountains, ran down to the valleys
   to the place that you appointed for them.
9You set a boundary that they may not pass,
   so that they might not again cover the earth.

10You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
   they flow between the hills,
11giving drink to every wild animal;
   the wild asses quench their thirst.
12By the streams* the birds of the air have their habitation;
   they sing among the branches.
13From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
   the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

14You cause the grass to grow for the cattle,
   and plants for people to use,*
to bring forth food from the earth,
15 and wine to gladden the human heart,
oil to make the face shine,
   and bread to strengthen the human heart.
16The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,
   the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
17In them the birds build their nests;
   the stork has its home in the fir trees.
18The high mountains are for the wild goats;
   the rocks are a refuge for the coneys.
19You have made the moon to mark the seasons;
   the sun knows its time for setting.
20You make darkness, and it is night,
   when all the animals of the forest come creeping out.
21The young lions roar for their prey,
   seeking their food from God.
22When the sun rises, they withdraw
   and lie down in their dens.
23People go out to their work
   and to their labour until the evening.

24O Lord, how manifold are your works!
   In wisdom you have made them all;
   the earth is full of your creatures.
25Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
   creeping things innumerable are there,
   living things both small and great.
26There go the ships,
   and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

27These all look to you
   to give them their food in due season;
28when you give to them, they gather it up;
   when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
   when you take away their breath, they die
   and return to their dust.
30When you send forth your spirit,* they are created;
   and you renew the face of the ground.

31May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;
   may the Lord rejoice in his works-
32who looks on the earth and it trembles,
   who touches the mountains and they smoke.
33I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
   I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
34May my meditation be pleasing to him,
   for I rejoice in the Lord.
35Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
   and let the wicked be no more.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord!
